💬 Common Everyday Phrases

These are common French phrases explained word-by-word for beginners:

😊 Comment ça va ?
How are you?
🧩 Comment = how, ça = it/that, va = goes
(Literally: "How is it going?")
🙋 Je m'appelle Anna.
My name is Anna.
🧩 Je = I, m'appelle = call myself, Anna = Anna
(Literally: "I call myself Anna.")
🤝 Enchanté(e) de vous rencontrer.
Nice to meet you.
🧩 Enchanté(e) = pleased, de = to, vous = you (formal), rencontrer = meet
🏠 Où habites-tu ?
Where do you live?
🧩 Où = where, habites = live (you), tu = you (informal)
🌏 Je viens d'Inde.
I come from India.
🧩 Je = I, viens = come, de = from, l'Inde = India
📘 J'apprends le français.
I am learning French.
🧩 Je = I, apprends = learn, le français = French
❓ Je ne comprends pas.
I don’t understand.
🧩 Je = I, ne + pas = not, comprends = understand
🐢 Parlez lentement, s'il vous plaît.
Please speak slowly.
🧩 Parlez = speak, lentement = slowly, s'il vous plaît = please
🗣️ Parlez-vous anglais ?
Do you speak English?
🧩 Parlez = speak, vous = you (formal), anglais = English
🆘 Pouvez-vous m'aider ?
Can you help me?
🧩 Pouvez = can (you), vous = you, m' = me, aider = help
📝 J'ai une question.
I have a question.
🧩 J' = I, ai = have, une = a, question = question

“Comment ça va ?” is used informally.
👉 Say “Comment allez-vous ?” when you're being polite.
🧩 French follows S-V-O order:
👉 Subject – Verb – Object (like English)
Example: J'aime le français. = I love French.
⚙️ Negative sentences use ne ... pas around the verb:
Example: Je ne comprends pas. = I don’t understand.
👋 Je m'appelle... is how to say your name.
Example: Je m'appelle Emma. = I’m Emma.

🙋‍♀️ “Je m'appelle...” = “My name is...” or “I call myself...”
📣 French pronunciation is smooth. Practice with slow speech first: “Parlez lentement, s'il vous plaît.”
🇫🇷 People appreciate when you try. Even if you make mistakes, smile and say: “Je suis débutant(e).” = I’m a beginner.
❗ “Excusez-moi” means “Excuse me”.
👉 Very helpful in shops or when asking strangers.
